Barn at Night, 9x12"

Barn at Night, 8x10" pastel on board by Adriana Meiss

Last December, I had some paintings on exhibit at a local library and instead of  having a reception I thought that a pastel demonstration on how I approach painting night scenes would be more interesting.

The night before, doubts crept in and in panic mode I felt the need to do a small version of what I planned to paint:

Barns, Study, 5x7" pastel on board
Next day, feeling more confident, and taking into account that I had just an hour and a half to do the demo, I decided to simplify the scene. This is a far as it got:

Barn, Demo
Back home, I made further changes in color and composition to the demo painting. I had forgotten to leave enough space between the silo and the top edge so in order to make it work I had to reduce the size of the main objects. I'm happy with the result and can even imagine a similar scene with a light in the distant barn...

Bravo! I think it must be difficult to work with these colors, really dark. Your accomplishments are truly successful.

Hi Veronique, Thank you for your comment! It's not that difficult to work with these colors if you select the right palette first. To do that I tested the colors on black paper; some dark greens, for example, looked more yellow than green. Now I keep a separate box with about 30 pastels that include greens, browns, and blues. Believe it or not black is rarely used. Also, I usually start with a board that has been covered with micaceous iron oxide (Golden Fluid Iridescent Acrylics), which gives it a sparkling grayish color. I hope you try it!

An interesting progression through each reworking of the scene. I haven't tried a night painting yet, but I think I will have to give it a go after seeing what you have done. Thanks for sharing this.

That is a beautiful barn painting, Adriana! It's amazingly moody and mysterious. A separate nighttime palette is a great idea.

I love your night scenes. I'm going to take up your advise and start a separate "night scene" box. I'd love to try some, especially with the background in Iridescent Acrylics. Nicely done, Adriana!!

Thank you Joann! Having a separate box with carefully selected colors for night scenes makes it easier to paint them. I would love to see what you come up with!
