Yearning for Spring, 16x12

Yearning for Spring, pastel on board by Adriana Meiss
Living in Central New York for so many years I have learned to expect long, cold winters. But in those rare occasions when we get mild winters, my mind rapidly forgets what's normal and starts yearning for the next season. I wasn't that aware of this yearning until I found this photo while cleaning my studio. The need to paint it right away took me by surprise, and it was finished in no time. It probably needs more work but the yearning for bright greens is so strong that it has blinded me.

The scene is from our orchard, from a time when the Nanking Cherries did  not have much competition from the nearby apple trees.

I agree! This painting reminds me that Spring can't come soon enough. I like how you kept the background subdued so the cherry tree stands out.

Hilda, Thank you for the nice comment! Cold weather is coming back so this painting will be reminding me that nice weather is around the corner.
Donna, Thank you! I did it on a reused board. I had to reapply pumice to it because it had lost some of it's tooth and the result was a board with tiny ridges that made it impossible to blend with the fingers. I've learned to apply the pastel in a different way when working on reused boards. The funny thing is that the thinking process is also different, I take more time to think what the next step is going to be. Maybe I should do that to all my new boards...

Adrianna, This is just soooo lovely! That cherry tree is simply SINGING! So pretty and soft and warm...Yeah...you know what I'm saying...Just like YOU...I really can't wait much longer for Spring to come! This long drawn out cold and snow is just not fun anymore! I need a jolt of color again! Looking forward to some Springtime beauty! I hope that someday I can get down to the Otisco Farmstead again and I'll loook you up! Okay?

Thank you Corinne! I'm sorry for the late reply but I was not aware of your comment. Now that we are in the middle of painting season we should arrange some time to paint together!
