The Red Pine, 10 x 8"

The Red Pine, pastel on board by Adriana Meiss
This is a very simplified scene from a very busy reference photo, which had willows and bushes in the background and lots of joe pye weeds in the foreground.

For some reason I just wanted to paint the crooked pine with the open field behind it. To give it an air of mystery I added the cloudy atmosphere and subdued colors. To me it speaks of comfortable loneliness. I'm interested in knowing how it makes you feel.

Hi Adriana.

I think your tree is wonderful! I'm surprised to read how much you eliminated. It doesn't have a lonely feeling to me, rather an intriguing, what's around the corner? feeling. I want to follow your lovely pastel light. Well done!

Hi Susan, Thank you for visiting and commenting! It's not easy to simplify, but it helps if you ask yourself the question "What do I want my painting to say/reflect" --It saves so much trouble and time!
Lovely paintings you have!

Beautifully painted, Adriana. I would love to visit this place..the
simplified version without more trees and bushes...I love the light in the meadow ...wonderful work as always!!

I like this a lot, Adriana, but then, you always manage to capture such peaceful moods. I am so overwhelmed with "stuff" in some paintings and gravitate toward quiet, restful spaces like those you paint.

Hilda, Thank you so much! I think you would have liked the place where I took the reference photo, the problem in my case is that I don't know how to handle so much stuff yet!

Donna, Thank you! Thinking back, I now realize that even though I find painting very relaxing in general, painting serene scenes is what relaxes me the most!
